Hi to the students in Geelong I met last Thursday at the lecture I gave on ‘Difference, Diversity and Doing Justice’.
Please leave your comments here if you would like to continue the conversation or have questions about where to learn Auslan etc.
Geelong has a wonderful Deaf community and I encourage you, if you’re interested in learning Auslan, to take the plunge! If you’ve still got a couple of years at uni to go, this will give you time to acquire another language.
In response to a number of queries from soon-to-graduate teacher education students (and those who like to prepare well ahead of time), here’s a great resource to help you put together a professional portfolio for teaching. It has been developed by staff in the School of Education at the University of New England http://fehps.une.edu.au/Education/portfolio.pdf
If you are a recent graduate or experienced teacher with a professional portfolio you are willing to ’showcase’ here (minus the personal details of course), many student teachers would greatly appreciate your generosity. Seeing a finished product or exemplar is a great way to understand what is required. So, if you’re willing, please let us know.
You’ll notice that I’ve added a category ‘Graduating soon?’ where I’ve added the above link and will continue to add resources.
Try this fun activity with your students – great maths practice! How does it work?
- How many times a week would you like to eat chocolate? (more than once but less than 10)
- Multiply this number by 2
- Now add 5
- Multiply it by 50
- If you have already had your birthday this year add 1756; if you haven’t, add 1755
- Now subtract the four digit year that you were born. You should have a three digit number
The first digit in your answer is the number of times you wanted to eat chocolate each week.
The next two digits are YOUR AGE! (Oh yes, it’s true!!!!!)
Note: This is supposedly the only year (2006) it will work – why’s that?!
Hi everyone,
If you happen to stumble into my blog, amidst your busy time in schools, and have something interesting to report about language teaching, in particular, I’d love to hear about it. Hope the prac rounds are going well!

Click here for the Deaf Role Models for Deaf Students (DRMDS) project.
If you’re a Deaf person and currently studying or considering study at university, you’ll find the profiles of role models on this site a valuable resource. You may wish to also order a (free) copy of the DVD of these and other Deaf people talking about their experiences in tertiary education (in Auslan, subtitled and with voice over).
If you’re a Deaf person who has already qualified through tertiary education, are you willing to submit a personal profile and be included as a role model on this site? If so, I’d love to hear from you!
And if you’re already featured on this site and wish to update your profile, please contact me via this blog.

I’m exploring the world of blogging and making links to my existing website. I look forward to getting the hang of this so I can post current issues, ideas, research and resources related to teaching, deafness and language and get your feedback through comments and discussion.
